A systematic spectroscopic study of eight hydrous ferric sulfates relevant to Mars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ferric sulfates were observed on Mars during orbital remote sensing and surface explorations. These observations have stimulated our systematic experimental investigation on the formative conditions, stability fields, phase boundaries, and phase transition pathways of these important minerals. We report here the results from the first step of this project: eight synthesized anhydrous and hydrous crystalline ferric sulfates and their structural characters reflected through spectroscopic studies. A few phenomena observed during the 150 sets of on-going experiments for stability field study are also reported, which reveal the structural distortions that can happen under environmental conditions relevant to Mars. 2010 Elsevier Inc. Comparative Spectroscopic Study of Three Ferric Sulfates: Kornelite, Lausenite
Introduction: Sulfates have been identified on Mars by orbital remote sensing (OMEGA and CRISM) and during surface exploration (Viking, MER) [1-4]. MER rovers have found Fe-sulfates at both landing sites. A ferric sulfate (jarosite) was identified with the Mössbauer spectrometer (MB) in Meridiani Planum outcrops (~10 wt.%) [5]. At Gusev Crater, light-toned salty soils are hydrous as seen by Min...

متن کاملFerric sulfates on Mars: A combined mission data analysis of salty soils at Gusev crater and laboratory experimental investigations
[1] A temporal visible near‐infrared (VIS‐NIR) spectral variation was observed from Tyrone yellowish salty soils based on seven periodic Pancam 13 filter observations made by the Spirit rover. The major change was the reduction of spectral slope from 434 nm to 753 nm. Based on the results from a set of systematic laboratory experiments on the stability field and phase transition pathway of typi...
متن کاملFerric Sulfates on Mars: Mission Observations and Laboratory Investigations
Fe-sulfates on Mars: Sulfate is one of the major types of secondary minerals found on Mars by recent missions, which reinforced its importance for Mars science. Sulfates are excellent hosts of water, the sinks of acidity, and maybe the most active species in the past and current surface/near-surface processes on Mars [1]. Although Mgand Ca-sulfates were identified with wide vertical and horizon...
